DIPLOMAS IN READING RECITAL
(ALCM)
¡¡

This is a one-year speech programme designed to prepare candidates for formal speech qualifications.  This is a useful programme for anyone aspiring to develop a high standard of speech skills.  It is particularly useful to those for whom speaking is a part of their professional life, e.g., phonics teachers, customer service providers, professional presenters and training consultants.  The Diploma (ALCM) is a fairly demanding credential, and the candidate should ideally be a practising teacher or trainer, or someone very serious about speech improvement.  There are four modules in our training scheme:

Module One: Phonetics

A study of practical phonetics is foundational to all good speech.  The programme is taught by a skilled trainer who will assist participants in leaning up undesirable speech patterns.  Related issues such as rhythm, pacing and linkage will also be covered.  The participant will be made aware of the areas in which he or she must make improvements in order to qualify for the award.

Module Two: Pronunciation

This is an advanced pronunciation course based on Colin Mortimer’s Elements of English Pronunciation.  A lot of remedial work will be done via taped material.  The participant will become familiar with the principles of effective pronunciation, and motivated towards a higher level of fluency.  Issues to be covered include weak forms, clusters, connected speech, contractions, and stress.

Module Three: Reading Skills

This module is preliminary to working on the examination pieces.  Instruction will be given on the art of reading prose (e.g., fiction, novels, etc.), and poetry.  Background information to the examination pieces will also be provided.  The result will be an awareness of how the reader might bring all of his or her skills to bear on a clean and aesthetic delivery of the text.

Module Four: Recital Preparation

A significant amount of time will be taken up with actual rehearsal.  Candidates will prepare a programme of six pieces of varying styles and length, forming a recital of some twenty minutes in duration.  Participants will also be cued in on the skills of sight-reading (i.e., reading aloud something which you have not seen before).  Tips will be provided for handling questions that the examiner might ask.
