Fellow TM,

Toastmasters, just like any other "sales oriented business", requires certain skills and attitudes. I have listed key elements found in all true Toastmasters leaders below. Many of these elements may not be new to you, but I challenge you to read them in a new way by asking:

How good am I at that? instead of the old way by saying: I know that.

When you read the elements and evaluate yourself (one to five on each one), you will hold an individualized game plan that will make you a true leader.

Here s how to rate yourself:

1=never
2=hardly ever
3=sometimes
4=frequently
5=always

If you are serious about achieving success for yourself and your club, create an action plan for each element that you rate a 4 or below. Work on two of your strengths and one of your weaknesses every day.

And Remember: No one become a leader overnight you become a leader one step at a time :-).

1. Establish and maintain a positive attitude. This is the first rule of life an I
can do it state of mind. A happiness that makes others wants to spend time with you.

2. Your commitment to a positive attitude is KEY whether this is your own life
or your toastmasters club, it will put you on a path to success.

3. Set and exceed goals. The true professional is dedicated, well-disciplined,
and a self-directed person.

4. Take pride in being a Toastmaster. Pride shows. It has an enthusiasm that
attracts people to your club.

5. Listen. Your members want to tell you what they need. Just ask the right
questions and listen to understand.

6. Show confidence. Confidence in what you do and who you are encourages
your club members and leaders.

7. Maintain personal ethics. Work hard, maintain truthfulness, be sincere, and
live up to your commitments in your club every week.

8. Know your club, area and organization. A given for any leader in any field.

9. Know your desired objective (of the meeting or speech project) before you
begin. On a piece of paper, write a one-sentence objective for that meeting or speech before you begin.

10. Don t stop your speech preparations until the goal (objective) is achieved.

11. Feel and transfer personal success experiences. Your ability to feel success
and transfer that success to your members and "prospects" builds your character. If your belt is notched with success, you give your potential new members more confidence in you and your club.

12. Have a strong desire to help others. This is a rule of life and business
success.

13. Strive for excellent communication skills. Delivering and receiving a clear
message is at the heart of the process to be a better speaker.

14. Have a great sense of humor. Humor is tacit approval. Humor is also a
quick way to build rapport.

15. Establish and build long-term relationships. The true leader will make
short-term sacrifice for long-term gain every time.

16. Think and act like a partner. Having a partnership philosophy means
working in everyone s behalf.

17. Cultivate future leaders. True leaders develop leaders in their clubs.
Stay in touch with your key people. Motivate them and help them become leaders.

18. Have the desire to succeed. How strong is it? What are your reasons? How
have you dedicated and utilized you capabilities? To the best of your ability?

19. All the time? Desire is one element that binds us all together.

20. Do it with passion. Love what you do. When you love what you do, it shows
and it s as contagious as attitude. Find that passion in Toastmasters, and you can succeed beyond your dreams.

My Score:

84-95 - Congratulations, Mr./Ms. Leader..

76-83 - You can taste it. You re on the right track. Keep it up every day and you ll break new ground.

57-75 - You re in the big group of toastmasters who think of themselves as leaders but really aren t. Make a personal game plan in each weak area, and execute it day by day.

42-56 - Whatever type of speech you do, it s just a talk, not a commitment to leadership. You need to make a conversion plan.

19-41 - Why did you join Toastmasters :-)

**********************************************************

Can you become a GREAT speaker?

Do you enjoy telling people what you think on a subject?
Are you sensitive to others' reactions to what you say?
Do you talk with your hands?
Do you think visually?
Do you like telling people what you have learned so they can benefit, too?
Is there a little bit of a cheerleader in you?

If you answered "yes" to even half of these questions you have all the chances of becoming a GREAT speaker.......but.........ONLY if you practice you craft...

As the philosopher Confucius said;

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I DO.... and I understand...."

TM's: Think about this next time YOU are up for a project!!

Distinguished Club Program.

Eh, what is this??????

If you participated in last months COT you will remember this was discussed in great details.

Very simple; It's an award that are giving to clubs who within the Toastmasters year (July - June) are doing measurable progress, and are achieving the goals set out by the club committee, in other words, the only way a club can achieve these awards is to work as A TEAM!!. Different qualification has to be fulfilled within the year, and why I am mentioning this in this newsletter is:

Some clubs in the country didn't participated in the fantastic training with the super team from Singapore, and that means, that your club already now wouldn't be able to achieve President's Distinguished Club in 2004-2005!! This also means your country will not be able achieve President's Distinguished Country/Division and this also means that the new District that we all are a part of.......... cannot achieve President's Distinguished District either!!

Remember what my theme was/is for my term in office???

T E A M......Together Everyone Achieve More!

You and your club have an opportunity to correct this, if your club didn't attended with enough officer on July 17, but only if YOU TAKE ACTION right now.........

Gea Bang Peng, The District Governor for "80" phoned me the other day, and wanted to hear how everything are going for Thailand. Well, I told him we are doing fine, but we had let the District down already from the beginning of the new District. He asked me to tell all of you out there this:

"If your club for whatever reason didn't participated with enough officer last month or not at all; you can host your OWN club officer training...... in your own club, BEFORE August 28!!!!!! And the TEAM... = all of Thailand's club are qualified and still "in the race" for President's Distinguished status !!

Why should we do this you may ask?

1. To be a team player!!
2. You don't think your new officers needs training or motivation to run a successful club?? :-).......

I don't want to sound rude on this, but why don't host your own club officer training? It's extremely valuable for all members to know about and you probably would be able to find good candidates for NEXT TERM; this is only 4 short months away. DO IT NOW (the theme for District 80, in 2004-2005).

When you have done the training in your club, immediately.....send me your list with participants names, emails and mobile phones, so my team of Area Governors knows who they are.

I need those list NO LATER then August 28, 2004. The rest is now up to you!

This year November 25 - 28, 2004.

For those of you who were with me in Singapore at District 80 launch, you know already this will be a fantastic event!!

Referring back to my leadership article just above........ ask yourself how good you are at knowing what is going on at these events??

The District Governor Gea Ban Peng and his team who were here at the COT, really hope that Thailand can have at least 20 toastmasters to participate at the convention, and they have arranged a pre-paid block of Early Bird Packages (MYR 438, TB. 4,800), 5 for Thailand. This means if you take leadership on this and act now....... you can get one of these packages...

So, I hope as many as possible will come with me and support our humorous Speech & Evaluation winners, and myself too.
